Te Rea Challenges Word Of The Day

L.I: Creating a DLO about a Te reo maori word.

In LS2, today I was working on a Te Reo Maori DLO. This DLO is when you pick a maori word then write what in means in english. After that, I wrote facts about my te reo maori word. The word I chose was 'Whanganui' and in english it means 'Big Harbour'. As you can see in my DLO there are a bunch of facts about how long it takes to get there, what is whanganui, why is it called whanganui and many more facts. I really enjoyed making this DLO because I can show and tell people about different te reo maori words.

Digital Board Game

LI: To create a digital board game for the juniors

This week we designed digital board games with a Christmas theme to play with the junior students. To play the game successfully they will need to read and follow the instructions, then use their counting skills to move around the board. Today we showed our Year 4 students how to make their own games. making this was fun because we made these for our younger kids.

Decorating The Tree

L.I: To decorate the tree in the office with our handmade decorations.

This Term LS2 was working on our sewing. We got to pick our holiday decoration and I chose a Hanukkah stocking and my other one was a Tongan palm tree . We chose to hang them on the Christmas tree. Today most of the LS2 students have finished their sewing so we went to hang them on the tree we first went to the office where the tree was then when we got there we were talking with Mr Jonhstion (our client) about our holiday decorations and how they look and that if we had any thing we would do differently next time. Then we stood up one by one to hang our holiday decoration on the tree. This was fun and cool looking and we put our holiday decorations on the christmas tree.

Operation Christmas Drop

LI: To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.

training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 50 remote islands that surround Guam. Today in LS2 we have been researching the Operation Christmas Drop. It is a tradition that started in 1952, with the help of many people donating money and volunteering to help wrap the presents to send to Guam , the air force Men & Women have been going around to 60 different islands and countries to drop off supplies in large crates that land with a parachute. It started off as an training exercise for the air force men & women to practice taking food supplies to there troops but then it began to be the longest US civil defense in the world. Something I have learnt and found interesting is that when they make the presents is that they use the same size boxes for all the presents. Doing this was fun and cool to learn what the US Air force is doing for Islands that are unfortunate to get things that we have and how the community is helping with this Operation.

Illustrated Story

LI: To write a pourquoi (tell me why or how) story that paints a picture in the mind of the reader.

Our challenge this week was to create a porquoi story that we would illustrate and share with our junior classes. A porquoi story tells us why something is the way it is. Our story tells why/how… This morning we shared our stories with Room 2 and Room 4, and they loved listening to them. I enjoyed doing this story because I got to work collaboratively with my friends and were very creative with our animated story.

Design Technology Challenge

LI:To design and make a holiday decoration that fits the client brief.

This week, The LS2 students designed and created Holiday Decorations to hang on the christmas tree. We started off  by asking questions to our client  Mr Johnston then we created a DLO(Brainstorm, mood board) with the information that Mr jontsthon gave us we did this DLO to understand what we are going to make and to see how many materials that we are going to use . The materials LS2 used were felt, thread, cotton, needles and many more but before we started on creating our designs we practiced how to do blanket stitching and running stitch so that we can get the hang of sewing. Some of the holidays people chose were Hanukkah, Dewali, Christmas and more. My decoration  that I made was a palm tree with a Tongan flag sewed onto it and my second one was a Hanukkah socking. I’ve been working hard on these decorations and so had the rest of LS2. I really enjoyed this activity because I learnt how to do new things and even though I had some accidents with the needle I still had fun making my decorations. something i would think on working on with sowing is to i need to stop stabbing myself with the needle.

Art Colouring Book - Step it up Challenge

LI: To use TEEL paragraphs to explain our colour choice

Last week I completed the Step it Up art challenge from the Summer Learning Journey activities. The purpose of this task was to explain our colour choice using the language and vocabulary we learnt from watching the information video. I used the TEEL paragraph structure to help me explaian my thinking. Then we were learning about the elements of art the elements of art are Line,Shape,Form,Space,Color, value,And Texture. I have learnt that a person cannot create art without using at least one of these elements. Line a line can be straight or wavy fine or bold sometimes if you put lines together you can make shapes. Shapes can be geometric like for example squares circle  and triangles or natural like trees sea shells they can be two dimensional or flat  like a pencil marker on  paper or they can be free dimensional like a sculpture when something is freed dimensional it has form. Objects  with form take up space or at least take up space. Space is the distance or area between around above or within things it can be the area that has been taken out by the object or it can be the area around the object. Color can often show us space color is the most expressive element of art. I used a lot of these aliments when i do art like how it says that color is the most expressive element of art like for example sometimes i express my feelings when i color if i'm in like a  good mood and im doing art there is a most likely chance that most of the colors are going to be a litter color same thing goes when i'm sad and i'm doing art it is most likely that most of my colors will be darker. Doing this activity was a fin and cool thing one of the things I liked about this is that we got to choose what picture or portrait we wanted to do and that we could use what color we wanted and not always had to copy the same colors of the picture or portrait.

Art Coloring Book

 LI: To experiment with colors

This picture is called the siesta by Paul Gauguin.

This morning we tried one of this year’s Kick Start Summer Learning Journey activities. The purpose of this task was to experiment with colors by mixing colors from the original palette with pop colors. This allowed us to recolors famous painting or images of landmarks around the world. This was a fun and cool activity i like how we got to choose what ever colors we wanted to use on the picture as you can see the picture that is on the left is the original picture and on the right is the picture maid.

Te Whanau Raukura Performance

Today we were visited by the Te Whanau Raukura. The Te Whanau Raukura is a kapa haka group they performed for us and told us that they had a taiaha, poi and a te rakau and they used them to explain the meaning behind elements of the Maori culture. After that they split up and came to a class each and in there classes they were playing a game with us the the teacher that was in our class was Mrs Bekah

she told us how to play this game could pukana. How you play this game is you get in a round circle and if one person says pukana to you you say it back to them or to the next person next to you if the person that says pukana to you and his or her hand is not facing you you do not say pukana back to her or he. It was a wonderful and nice performance.

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

Today we made a provocation DLO. A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation which is the YES and the NO our provocation was Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that information to help us form an opinion that we were all happy with our decision. Our opinion was a Yes and No because there are some reasons for why we need to wear a mask and there are some reasons why we shouldn’t wear one. Both Yes and No reasons are equally important. We need to stay safe and away from the Covid 19 and other diseases.

Main Idea/Embarrassment

L.I To find out the main idea

This DLO is about the Main Ideas in the book this book is called the Embarrassment poem. I worked with Makaili,Hosea,Liletina and  Rj. We needed to read the book twice to find out the main details that will help others and yourself understand the main Idea. As you can see in this DLO that we think that the MAIN IDEA is knowing how to handle Embarrassment. Working with my friends was really fun and enjoying because we shared our ideas and we were collaborating, working as a team. The thing that i liked about this poem is how it tell us the secret to not be embarrassment like for an example you can jest laugh
it all out till the people that is laughing at you has left.

Math Challenge

LI:To learn about math and weight

This week we were put into groups for math In these groups we made up names that  represent math or includes math names  , our name that we chose for our group  was The multiplying 7’s because we had seven people in our group and we were supposed to multiply our questions we were given . In the multiplying 7’s were Victoria our leader Giovanni,Makaili,Lily,Karlos , Ong  and me , we put all of our opinions together to come with different solutions to solve our challenges and we would have to ask questions if we didn't understand the question or ask for help because no one should have sat in silence because we are a team and we are all  supposed participate so we all can have friendship even though we haven't worked together but we  did make a big difference and we worked as a good team whether we liked  working together or not this activity was a good challenge for not only me but also my group .

Why is it important to use our PBS CARE value

LI:To write a explanation using TEEL paragraph

This week we have been revising explanation writing. Next week is our assessment week so we did this collaborative challenge to remind ourselves what is needed when we write explanations. We found it interesting the way the paragraphs all connected at the end and you could see the links between the ideas.

The screencastify link of us reading our explanation can be found here:

Learning and understanding fractions

L.I: To learn how to group and split in fractions.

This week is our last session with Mr Fisi’iahi for this term as it was last week. For this week my group and I worked on fractions and played a game called Play tower of hanoi. We also used Multi Link cubes to help us understand fractions and to help us solve the questions. I really enjoyed playing with my partner solving fraction questions. We also played a game called Dicy numbers which got us into parnters. This game was really fun and competitive as we had to see who was the first one to win.  Understanding fractions helps us understand the groups, twice and the double. Double means twice as example 6+6=2 or 6 x 2=12.

Why is it important to make wise choices?

LI:To structure and write an explanation.

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Did you know there are 8 million tons of plastic that end up in our ocean every year?

Because of this millions of  sea animals die every year. How would you feel if there was a plastic net tied around your neck and stopping you from breathing, how would you feel if a plastic straw is stuck up your nose, how would you feel if you were swimming in plastic.. How would you feel if you were eating plastic. Do you like fish and chips if you do then there might not be any more fish because they're dying from the plastic and if you want to save them and many more sea animals jest by throwing your our someone's rubbish in the bin and remember if you throw one rabbis in the bin you are saving one sea animal.

Blub:

we had to write a paragraph  that had to do with plastic pollution did u know that we dropped less plastic than last year .did u know last year we dropped 5 trillion pieces of plastic and this year we dropped  5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean.

Inquiry

LI: To think deeply about a change I would make

I will make every kid in NZ that doesn't have lunch to have lunch the reason i am going to do that is because if .  to make every homeless person to not be homeless anymore. After that I will help people that are struggling with paying the bills and rent. I will make sure adults will get a good amount of money they deserve. I will pay for people that can’t afford school equipment and sport equipment. I will make sure that we will have more Maori and Pasifika teachers to teach the kids about there coulters and other coulters.

Inquiry

LI: To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice

This week i decide which political party I would vote for I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision. If I was 18 I would vote for Jasinder Ardern because she is going to make sure that every kid that don't have lunch in Nz will have lunch This means if Jasinder Ardern Won the election in my electorate Jenny Salesa would be our member of parliament and Jasinder Ardern would become the Prime Minister.

DARE To Make A Choice

LI: To learn about making good choices.

Today, we were learning about drugs. A program made by the New Zealand  police called the Dare program, teaches kids about drugs. We learnt about drugs being bad, and the effects it has on our future. We also learnt something new about drug classes, A, B, and C. This was interesting, because we thought most drugs were illegal than legal. But only  about ten drugs were illegal, because of the harm, and effects. The first activity we did was sorting our drugs that we thought were legal, and illegal. Next we sorted them in order from most harmful, to harmful. Our most harmful was cocaine, and our least harmful was Milo. Next worked together in a group on a scenario activity. There were six scenarios, about kids being involved in drugs or beer. For the activity you were to give a punishment for each situation. The one we found most interesting was number five. Two Seventeen year olds were drinking at a bar. We thought that this was wrong, because you have to be eighteen and over to drink. They are also drinking at a bar, which meant that someone must have given them the alcohol. So we all agreed, and decided that the kids would have a warning, and the owner of the bar (the person who gave them the alcohol) will lose their job, get a fine of $1000, and lose their license. This is a good enough punishment, because the owner should be asking for an id, and should only be selling to people eighteen and over. Lastly we went into partners, and talked about questions that had to do with what we learnt, and about things that surprised us. One thing to remember is that you are the most important person in your world.

Tech/Science with Mrs Sharma

LI:To identify the different types and uses of plastic.

Sea turtles that eat 14 pieces of plastic have 50 per cent chance of dying, CSIRO study finds - ABC News

This week for tech the year 7s at Panmure Bridge School  learned about the different types of plastics. We also learned about Plastic, material, wood, paper and metal which helps us understand more about  plastics. We also played an activity that will give us more information on plastic. The activity we played was about looking around the class and trying to look for the different materials that we could see. The most interesting fact that I learnt was that every year 17 billion rubbish gets thrown away in the ocean.

Statistics with Mr Fisi'iahi'

LI:Identify patterns and relationships between data

Today for maths we did statistics with Mr Fisi’ahi. We created a DLO for our bar graph that we made to count how many people on our data cards. We used the data cards to count how many pre-teens and teens watch T.V and the most was the pre.teens. While I was doing maths I learnt that when you're thirteen you're a teenager and when you turn twenty you are an adult. Another thing I learnt is that 0.5 is bigger than 0.25. I worked with my buddy Afa and we both completed this DLO.

Family Tree

LI:To create a Family about your Family

This week for our Te Reo Challenge, I created a DLO that talks about my family tree DLO that shows my family members' names. I used Maori words that could help us understand  more about my  family tree. The family tree includes our siblings, parents, grandparents and great grandparents and also it has designs I traced and created. The most interesting fact I learned well making this DLO was that another word for Family Tree is Whakapapa.

Its cool 2b me

L.I: To complete this task that will help you understand things about me.

This DLO is about me, This DLO can help you understand some things you may know or may not know about me. The  Dare program helps us and inform us with things  that can kill us and helps us make wise choices.  What I really enjoyed was writing down My goals for this year. One of my goals is To become a famous rugby player. For example I want to be like Andrew Fifta when I grow up.

Biology

LI: To look for evidence in the data/an image and infer what might be happening

This DLO is about Observation and Science.  I worked with Jayden. Jayden and I worked together to get this task completed.  We looked for Images that we could use to help the readers underst our DLO. Me and Jayden completed this DLO by sharing our ideas ,Helping each other, Looking for images. The most important thing I learned was that Science is  empirical which means it is based on.

Art

LI: To paint a still life of sunflowers in the style of Vincent Van Gogh

last week we did art we painted a a still life of sunflower in the style of Vincent van Gogh. First we did our base which is the middle black bit then we did layers of paint then we build them up Mixing and blending colours to make different shades of the same colour. When we did this we had to not overload the brush with paint when we were painting the sunflowers we dabbed the brush it was fun and cool my favorite part about painting the sunflowers was that we took our time.

Math with Mr Fisi'iahi

LI:To solve and create Algebraic equation

Today my group and I  learnt Algebra with Mr Fisi’iahi. We started off by finding out the values of the animals. The animals we did were Piwaiwaka,Gecko,Kiwi,Tuatara and Pukeko. We summed up an answer then we  simplified the answers to make it easier to understand and explain what's happening. We created a DLO with our algebraic equations that we had to create for Mr Fisi'iahi. I really enjoyed working with my partner and my group to answer the questions we’re trying to solve. These tasks and questions help us understand and explain what Algebra is. We also learned how to balance the animals to make it equal and even. I learned how to add and subtract on Algebra.

Vincent Van Gogh Timeline

LI: To create a timeline to show the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Made with Padlet

My group worked collaboratively using Padlet to create a timeline about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was an artist from the post impressionist movement which meant he liked to paint still life paintings that captured a moment in time. We found it really interesting that while he was alive he didn't sell many paintings but in 1990, 100 years after his death, a painting by him sold for $82.5 million!

Science: Summarizing the text | Reading

L.I: To summarize the information.

This week for reading our focus is science. For this second activity my group and I skimmed and scanned our notes and shared ideas to create a collaborative summary explaining ‘what is science?’. We divided our lengthy summary into 3 following paragraphs: an introduction on science, the 4 main categories of science and the two types of science. We used a question dice that helped us with our learning and made us ask questions to help us think about our subject and provide ideas for our summary.

Science

LI: to find our 3 most vital ideas from the information answering the question 'What is Science

This week for reading our focus is science. In groups we watched a YouTube video explaining physics, chemistry, and biology (the things that are connected to it) and why science is important to us. After watching it twice, my group and I wrote down notes about some of the information that we took and remember from the video. We negotiated on the most important 7 of the notes to separate from the rest. We left 4 of those notes as ‘very important ideas’ and picked out our 3 vital ideas.  In our opinion we thought that the 3 most vital ideas were:
  1. Science is divided into 3 branches, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry.
  2. Basic science is knowing something and applied science is using what we know.
  3. Science is the knowledge behind every question.
